Impressive news from NWHG – plaque, walks, musical and statues.

This time we’re raising money for a plaque to Rose Fyleman, 1877-1957 writer, singer and teacher.
Who was she? Have you heard of the poem ‘There are fairies at the bottom of our garden’ published in Punch in 1917? Her first collection, ‘Fairies and Chimneys’, followed in 1918 and in 1927 ‘A Princess comes to our town’, a charming fantasy set in Nottingham in 1829 but with delightful illustrations of the city still recognisable today and recently republished by 5 Leaves.

After that, our next event is fast coming up – on Wednesday 15th July 2026 Karen Winyard will lead a new walk about the lives of Mary Bailey and Susannah Wright. Meet at 7 pm at the Lions in Nottingham Market Square. £5 – no need to book, just turn up. if you can’t make it, this walk will be repeated on Sunday 6th September – same rules apply but meet at the Lions at 2 pm.

Similarly, if you missed Miriam Jackson’s ‘Some Remarkable Women’ walk in June, it will be repeated on Sunday 16th August 2026. Meet at 2pm in front of Theatre Royal. £5 – no need to book, just turn up.

The musical “Sylvia” about Sylvia Pankhurst and starring Beverley Knight as Emmeline is coming to Curve Leicester from 24th September to 3rd October. I know it sounds a bit naff, and I’m not generally a musicals person, but I saw it in London a few years ago and I loved it! Highly recommended.
